Billy Corgan wants to record a Smashing Pumpkins Christmas album

“I might try to use the Christmas spirit to put the record together”.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has revealed that he’s hoping to record a Christmas album.

The singer was discussing the band’s plans when their 30th anniversary tour ends as he revealed that a festive offering could be next up.

“For me, once we get off tour, I’m either going to be doing some writing in LA with some friends or going back to Chicago to start writing new Smashing Pumpkins”, he explained to USA Today.

“I also have an inkling to try and get us to do a Christmas record one day, so I might try to use the Christmas spirit to put the record together in concept, even if we’re not ready to record it”.

However, it won’t be what fans might expect from the alt-rock icons, as Corgan plans to take the record in an acoustic direction.

“It would be probably lean more acoustic. I would think it’s a bit weird [to make] a wild Christmas records,” said Corgan.

“Although, I also like ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, which is basically 1950s rockabilly. But I don’t know. When I think Christmas music, I tend to think something you want to put on and sit around the tree with the kids and not rock out to. I don’t see us doing a rocking-out Christmas album.”

Meanwhile, Corgan recently explained to NME why Melissa Auf Der Maur isn’t part of the reunited Smashing Pumpkins line-up, having recently joined forces with James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin for ‘Shiny and Oh, SO Bright’, their first album from the classic line-up since 2000.
