Pussy Riot’s Pyotr Verzilov hospitalised after ‘suspected poisoning’

He remains in a critical condition.

Pussy Riot activist Pyotr Verzilov has been hospitalised in Moscow, where he remains in a critical condition.

Friends and family of the outspoken Putin critic believe that he was poisoned, according to Russian website Meduza.

He fell ill after attending a court hearing for Veronika Nikulshina, a fellow Pussy Riot member.

After initially passing out, he reportedly woke up and realised that he was losing his sight.

“First it was his vision, then his ability to speak, and then his ability to walk,” Nikulshina told Meduza.

She says that said Mr Verzilov was admitted to the hospital’s toxicology wing, where he remains in a serious condition. His mother was reportedly blocked access to her son and denied information on his condition.

Mr Vezilov was part of the group of Pussy Riot activists who were jailed after disrupting the World Cup final in July with a pitch invasion.

He is married to Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, the activist who was jailed for two years in August 2012 after conducting a “punk prayer” at a Moscow cathedral in protest against Vladimir Putin.

“My brother Petya may have been poisoned. In the toxicological department in a very serious condition”, she wrote on Twitter.

Pussy Riot added: “Our friend, brother, comrade Petr Verzilov is in reanimation. His life is in danger. We think that he was poisoned.”

In August, Russian authorities also blocked Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina from travelling to Scotland, after she was scheduled to promote her latest book.

Alyokhina was jailed alongside Nadezhda Tolokonnikova in 2012.
